A recent junior football match in Templestowe, Melbourne’s north-east, descended into chaos as a fight broke out, involving parents from both teams. The incident occurred during an under-11s game between Manningham United and the Rowville Eagles, igniting after players began throwing punches following a missed goal.

The confrontation escalated quickly, with more than ten parents rushing onto the field to participate in the brawl. Witnesses reported one parent being grabbed by the neck and thrown to the ground, highlighting the severity of the situation.

Both clubs condemned the behaviour. The president of Manningham United stated the club takes the matter seriously and does not tolerate such actions. Similarly, a spokesperson for the Rowville Eagles affirmed they would implement measures to prevent a recurrence of these unacceptable behaviours.

Parents have paid around $500 for their children to participate in the pre-season competition, underscoring the financial commitment made by families to provide a sporting experience. Following the incident, Tom Dixon from Play by the Rules emphasised the necessity for children’s sporting environments to be safe and enjoyable. He expressed concern about the distress the brawl may have caused young players, suggesting that such behaviour can create anxiety around participating in sports.

Dixon further noted that positive parental behaviour is crucial, as children often model their actions after their parents. When parents display aggression or disrespect, it sets a poor example, potentially leading children to emulate such conduct on the field.

As of now, Football Victoria has not released an official statement regarding the incident, although it is believed that disciplinary measures are being considered to address the situation.
