This morning, Hollywood’s elite gathered for the 2025 Academy Awards, celebrating the year’s standout films, actors, and creators. Notably, several Australians are in contention for prestigious accolades.

The Oscars kickoff at 11 am AEDT, with red carpet coverage commencing at 10:30 am AEDT. Late-night icon Conan O’Brien takes the reins as host, bringing along performances from nominees and award announcements by previous Oscar winners.

While the Oscars maintain their schedule, recent LA wildfires led to changes, including an extended voting period by a week and the cancellation of the Oscar Nominees Luncheon.

Among the Australian nominees, Guy Pearce stands out, receiving a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Brutalist, which is also vying for Best Picture, Best Actor (Adrien Brody), Best Supporting Actress (Felicity Jones), and Best Director (Brady Corbet). Pearce faces strong competition from Kieran Culkin, who has been a significant presence in awards season, leading Pearce to jokingly predict his own loss.

Additionally, filmmaker Adam Elliot is nominated for Best Animated Feature for Memoir of a Snail, alongside Melbourne producer Liz Kearney. Elliot previously won an Oscar for Best Animated Short in 2016 with Harvey Krumpet.

Cinematographer Greig Fraser receives a nod for his work on Dune: Part Two, after winning an Oscar for the previous instalment. Another nominee, Australian producer Maya Gnyp, shares a nomination for Best Documentary Short Film for I Am Ready, Warden alongside US director-producer Smriti Mundhra.

Rodney Burke, an Australian special effects supervisor on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is nominated for Best Visual Effects. He faces competition from compatriots Luke Millar and David Clayton, who worked on the Robbie Williams biopic Better Man, which features an anthropomorphic depiction of the singer.

For those interested in the full list of nominees and how to watch the nominated films, detailed coverage is available online. The Academy Awards promise to be a night filled with anticipation, recognition, and celebration of cinematic achievements.
