Authorities are investigating the deaths of 95-year-old actor Gene Hackman and his 65-year-old wife, Betsy Arakawa, whose bodies were discovered at their Santa Fe home on Wednesday. Sheriff Adan Mendoza indicated that the timing of their deaths is uncertain, with estimates suggesting it could be several days to a couple of weeks prior. Initial reports reveal no evidence of foul play, as neither body bore any signs of external wounds or a struggle.
The couple was found after a maintenance worker alerted the police due to an open front door and the discovery of Arakawa’s body in the bathroom beside fallen pills. The detective’s investigation indicated significant decomposition of both bodies. Arakawa was found on the floor next to a space heater, possibly having fallen, while Hackman’s body was located nearby in a similar state. Authorities noted that a deceased German shepherd was also found in the home.
Investigators are considering the possibility of gas poisoning, although they have seen no clear indications of a gas leak or carbon monoxide presence at the time of their inspection. The New Mexico Gas Company tested the property and found no issues. Autopsy results and toxicology reports are pending, leaving the precise causes of death unclear.
Earlier statements from the sheriff suggested there are no apparent signs indicative of murder or theft, yet the circumstances of the couple’s deaths have raised concerns, prompting a thorough investigation. Hackman, celebrated for his extensive film career and beloved as a father and grandfather, is mourned by his family, who expressed their devastation over the loss.
