Braydon Trindall has emerged as a surprising candidate for Queensland’s State of Origin selection this year, after an impressive start to the NRL season with the Cronulla Sharks. Following a standout 2024 campaign, Trindall showcased his abilities during a recent victory over the South Sydney Rabbitohs, where his exceptional kicking and game management were crucial in securing a commanding 27-12 win.
League icon and Maroons coach Billy Slater praised the 25-year-old’s performance on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show, particularly highlighting Trindall’s two remarkable 40/20 kicks. Slater remarked, "You know you’re on top of your game when you’re doing this," emphasising the player’s confidence and skill in executing critical opportunities. With Trindall taking the lead in kicking for the Sharks, Slater noted that he is having an outstanding season.
The discussion on the show also turned to Trindall’s potential inclusion in the Queensland squad, especially if veteran halfback Daly Cherry-Evans decides to withdraw as he nears the twilight of his career. Slater’s recognition of Trindall’s performance is likely to boost the young player’s confidence as he aims for representative honours.
"He’s a Queenslander, that’s for certain," Slater stated, stressing that Trindall’s recent and past performances have made him a candidate worth watching. His developing partnership with Nicho Hynes has allowed the seasoned player to concentrate on his running game, contributing to the Sharks’ cohesiveness on the field.
Cronulla is set to face the Bulldogs in their upcoming round four match, where Trindall will look to continue his fine form and strengthen his claim for a spot in the State of Origin team.
