Maximilian I, who served as the Emperor of Mexico, faced a grim fate when he was executed by firing squad in Queretaro on June 19, 1867. He was the younger sibling of Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria and had been placed on the Mexican throne with the support of French Emperor Napoleon III and conservative factions in Mexico back in 1864.
