On February 4, 2004, Mark Zuckerberg, a student at Harvard University, launched TheFacebook.com, a social networking platform designed for his peers. This site, which has since grown into a multi-billion dollar enterprise, traces its roots back to a project called Facemash, which Zuckerberg created in his dormitory by accessing the Harvard student database. Facemash featured a “hot or not” game where users rated photos of fellow students, but this concept was ultimately dismantled.
