While prosecutor Tali Costi noted that Dennis is not criminally responsible for Melissa’s death, she underscored his recklessness during the incident. Dennis’s barrister, Jane Abbey, interpreted her client as stoic, emphasising that he is experiencing deep grief privately. The couple’s tragic fallout stemmed from a domestic dispute over mundane household tasks, emphasising the suddenness of the situation which unfolded rapidly—within seconds, as presented through surveillance footage.
The court revealed that moments before the tragedy, there was a disturbance as Melissa attempted to engage with the vehicle. Abbey requested that Dennis receive a suspended sentence, a proposition the prosecution did not oppose.
