NSW Blues player Olivia Kernick displayed visible frustration during the first half of the second game in the Women’s State of Origin. This was prompted by her mistake, which allowed the Maroons to score a try.
In the early minutes of the match, Maroons hooker Lauren Brown executed a clever grubber kick from dummy half. Kernick seemed to be contesting for the ball in the in-goal area, where she had a fumble while trying to gain possession against Tamika Upton. The referee, Belinda Sharpe, referred the decision to the Bunker for a review. After analysis, Gerard Sutton determined that Kernick was not attempting to ground the ball and ruled in favour of Upton, granting her the try.
Following this incident, Kernick was notably upset and questioned the referee, expressing disbelief. Blues team-mate Millie Boyle praised Brown’s tactical kick, explaining how its low trajectory made it challenging for defenders to regain possession but easier for attackers to score.
However, Kernick redeemed herself later in the game, scoring NSW’s second try by skillfully evading Upton’s defence. This exemplary play helped her recover from the earlier misstep and showcased her resilience in a demanding match.
