Excitement is building in Melbourne as it gears up to host the first NFL game in 2026, while tourism experts criticise New South Wales (NSW) for missing the opportunity to host the matches in Sydney. Reports indicate that NSW officials visited the US for discussions with the NFL, but failed to agree on the necessary financial terms to secure the games. Premier Chris Minns stated the state declined the offer due to high costs, prioritising funds for crime prevention and health over the NFL event. Meanwhile, Victoria’s government rejoiced in the announcement, with Transport Minister Gabrielle Williams affirming Melbourne’s status as Australia’s sporting capital.

In addition to the NFL, Melbourne is preparing to welcome the NBA in October, adding more prestigious events to its roster. Despite Sydney’s recent hosting of significant events, including the women’s football World Cup and the UFC, Premier Minns downplayed any perception of Sydney missing out, highlighting the state’s ongoing successful sporting calendar. The NSW government had previously agreed to a $16 million deal for three UFC events, showcasing its commitment to hosting major events, albeit with a careful approach to expenditure.
