New South Wales Premier Chris Minns has undergone a cabinet reshuffle, elevating members of the current frontbench and introducing a new member to the team. This strategic move comes amid rising scrutiny regarding his hate speech laws, which are currently being contested in the Supreme Court.

Key changes in the cabinet include Steve Kamper, who has assumed the role of Minister for Jobs and Tourism. Additionally, Regional Transport Minister Jenny Aitchison has taken on the responsibilities of Minister for Roads, easing the burden on John Graham, who now permanently oversees transport. Although he will continue to be involved in the final stages of toll negotiations, his primary focus will shift to transport management.

Minns emphasised the importance of building a knowledgeable team to ensure favourable outcomes for motorists. Moreover, Janelle Saffin, the MP for Lismore, has made her cabinet debut as Minister for Recovery and Small Business, bringing personal insight into the traumatic experiences faced by her community. Deputy Premier Prue Carr acknowledged her unique perspective, notably the physical difficulties she has overcome in the face of natural disasters, affirming her resilience as an MP.

The cabinet reshuffle was prompted by Jo Haylen’s resignation over an incident involving her use of a government driver for personal winery trips. In light of her departure, Premier Minns has dismissed speculation regarding her potential reinstatement, confirming he has no intentions of returning her to the frontbench.

As the reshuffle takes place, tensions are escalating outside the parliament, where a group of activists plans to protest against the contentious hate speech laws. This move reflects the ongoing legal challenge and public discontent surrounding these proposed regulations.
