A man is currently in custody following an incident in which two female police officers were reportedly assaulted while conducting a welfare check in Sydney. The officers, aged 22 and 23, were called to Bunya Road in Bidwill at around 6.30pm yesterday after receiving reports of a man lying on the road.
Upon arrival, the officers attempted to engage with the man, who allegedly became aggressive. He reportedly kicked the 23-year-old officer in the stomach and struck her in the head, causing her to become unresponsive. In the midst of this, her 22-year-old partner attempted to intervene but was also assaulted during the confrontation.
In a bid to regain control, the 22-year-old officer attempted to deploy capsicum spray against the assailant. Fortunately, two additional officers arrived shortly after and were able to subdue the 19-year-old man.
The injured 23-year-old officer received on-site medical attention before being transported to the hospital, where she was treated for a concussion and has since been released. Meanwhile, the second officer was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure and was treated for minor bruising and scratches.
The young man involved in the incident was taken into police custody and subsequently transported to the hospital for a mental health evaluation. Authorities are expected to file charges against him later today.
