New South Wales Deputy Premier Prue Car has unfortunately been diagnosed with breast cancer. In a statement released this morning, Car shared the disappointing news, confirming that the results of her recent screening led to the diagnosis.
She expressed the need to take some time off to undergo significant medical treatment, mentioning that her ministerial responsibilities would be temporarily managed by others. Besides her role as deputy premier, Car supervises the portfolios for Education and Early Learning, as well as Western Sydney, and she encouraged constituents in her electorate to keep reaching out to her office with any concerns during her absence.
Confidently, Car remarked on her previous experience with cancer, highlighting her determination to tackle this challenge head-on. She shared optimism regarding her prognosis and expressed gratitude towards the incredible medical team supporting her, stating they are hopeful about her treatment outlook.
Car emphasised the importance of early detection, urging women to remain vigilant with their health checks. Reflecting on her personal journey, she acknowledged the prevalence of cancer, particularly breast cancer, in the community. During her treatment, Car plans to focus on her recovery and spend time with her young family.
She previously battled kidney cancer in 2022 and has received well-wishes from colleagues, including NSW Premier Chris Minns, who expressed confidence in her resilience. Minns has appointed Minister for Natural Resources Courtney Houssos to act on Car’s behalf during her recovery.
The NSW opposition leader Mark Speakman also conveyed his support for Car, assuring her that both her Londonderry community and colleagues stand with her during this challenging time. Car’s commitment to her role remains firm, and she will continue as deputy premier while focusing on her health.
