Phil Gould has praised the performance of South Sydney’s diminutive fullback, Jye Gray, emphasising that he should secure a spot in the team’s 17-player lineup for the long term, even with the imminent return of star player Latrell Mitchell. Gray has been impressive during the first three rounds of the season, although it is anticipated that he will relinquish the No. 1 jersey to Mitchell when he is fit to play again.

Nonetheless, Gould believes that instead of dropping out of the squad, Gray could transition to a bench role, which could create challenges for opposing teams. During a discussion on Wide World of Sports’ Six Tackles With Gus, he highlighted Gray’s potential impact, stating, "He’s earned his position and he’s a typical Wayne Bennett type of player." Gould noted the caliber of Mitchell, recognising him as one of the best fullbacks in the game; however, he is confident that coach Wayne Bennett will find a way to leverage Gray’s talents off the bench.

Gould elaborated on the advantages of having Gray come on when rival players are fatigued, calling it a "nightmare" scenario for opposing teams. This strategic move could enhance South Sydney’s competitiveness, especially in the latter stages of matches.

Overall, the combination of Mitchell and Gray could prove to be a key asset for the Rabbitohs as they aim for success in the season ahead.
