Brad Fittler has dismissed speculation about Tom Trbojevic potentially moving to a new position amid the Manly Sea Eagles’ search for a replacement for Daly Cherry-Evans, who has announced he will depart the club at the end of the season. Cherry-Evans’ exit has prompted interest in Canberra’s Jamal Fogarty, but alternative strategies are being considered internally.
Billy Slater, speaking on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show, suggested shifting Luke Brooks to the halfback position and moving Trbojevic to five-eighth. However, Fittler quickly rebutted this notion, citing Trbojevic’s height and current injury issues, stating that he wouldn’t support such a move. Instead, Fittler proposed that Manly should focus on their promising younger players, highlighting the recent investments in talents Onitoni Large and Joey Walsh, both of whom possess strong capabilities.
Additionally, it seems Brooks might feel pressure to step up despite his past performance at the Wests Tigers. Andrew Johns weighed in on the discussion, referencing Kalyn Ponga’s challenging time at five-eighth for the Knights, labelling it a “disaster” and advising against a similar move for Trbojevic.
Johns remained optimistic about Manly’s ability to navigate Cherry-Evans’ departure, emphasising the leadership of Jake Trbojevic. He believes Jake will unite the team effectively during this transition, asserting that the challenge will enhance Jake’s leadership qualities. Overall, while the Sea Eagles face significant changes, there is confidence that they will adapt and find a way forward.
