The relocation of the NRL match between the Dolphins and Rabbitohs from Brisbane to Sydney has drawn sharp criticism from Kodi Nikorima’s wife, Bree, who deemed the decision “disgusting”. This reaction follows Brisbane AFL player Lachie Neale’s announcement that he would have refused to play had his season opener against Geelong been relocated. The NRL opted to continue with the fixture rather than postponing it, even as Tropical Cyclone Alfred threatens Queensland.

While the AFL chose to postpone two of its matches scheduled in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast due to weather concerns, the NRL proceeded with its plans, scheduling the game for 8pm Sydney time—7pm Queensland time—at CommBank Stadium. Bree Nikorima expressed her dissatisfaction on Instagram, revealing her struggles as she is six months pregnant and has two young children to care for amid the cyclone. She emphasised the lack of support for families left behind during the potentially dangerous weather events, questioning the NRL’s priorities.

Although the Dolphins Club was contacted for remarks, they declined to comment. Notably, no representatives from the club were quoted in the official announcement regarding the match’s relocation. On the other hand, Neale highlighted that while the AFL’s decision brought relief to players concerned about their family’s safety, the focus for the community remained on the impending storm rather than sports celebrations.

Neale, who has young children and a dog to consider, stated he wouldn’t have played if relocation was necessary, emphasising his responsibility toward his family. He acknowledged the uncertainty amongst players about the cyclone, stating the awareness developed throughout the week leading up to the match.

As the storm impacts various sporting events, including a rescheduling of the WPGA Championship, Neale conveyed relief felt among players, with many glad not to be forced away from their families during such a critical time. As they prepare for their upcoming match in Sydney, he expressed hope that the cyclone does not cause significant damage and that families stay safe.
