Dragons coach Shane Flanagan has refuted claims of nepotism regarding his son Kyle following the decision to bench halfback Lachlan Ilias ahead of the team’s Magic Round match. After a disappointing 46-18 defeat to the Roosters on Anzac Day, Ilias was dropped, paving the way for rising talent Lyhkan King-Togia to take on the No. 7 jersey, while Kyle will remain at five-eighth.
Flanagan defended his choice in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, emphasising that he would not hesitate to exclude Kyle from the team if his performance dipped. He noted that Kyle has been instrumental in the Dragons’ successes this season, highlighting his contributions with four tries and multiple assists. "Kyle has been one of our best players this year," Flanagan stated, adding that Kyle and teammate Clint Gutherson have frequently received votes for the players’ player award.
Despite some media criticism that aimed to blame Kyle for the recent defeat, Flanagan reiterated his objective perspective, indicating that he treats his son just like any other player. “If he doesn’t play well, he doesn’t play. He’d be gone. There’s no difference,” Flanagan asserted. He acknowledged that while the Roosters proved to be superior, Kyle’s performance still warranted his continuation in the line-up.
Flanagan’s commitment to the team’s success is evident, as he mentioned that all fans desire victory for the Dragons, a sentiment he shares completely. Overall, he remains confident in Kyle’s abilities and contributions, assuring fans that his selections are based on merit and performance rather than familial ties.
