In a thrilling match on Saturday night, the undermanned Bulldogs triumphed over the Sharks, claiming a 20-6 victory at Shark Park. This exciting win saw Reed Mahoney, the Bulldogs’ hooker, face scrutiny after being reported for two dangerous tackles, raising concerns about potential penalties from the NRL judiciary.

Mahoney’s troubles began in the 30th minute when he was penalised for a high tackle on Toby Rudolf as the Sharks were pushing towards the try line. Although Rudolf left the field for a head injury assessment, he was later able to return to the game. Mahoney was again cited for another high tackle, this time using his shoulder against Daniel Atkinson, who was already on the ground.

Post-match, Mahoney defended his actions, stating he didn’t believe he overreacted. “This is a tough sport… it’s Bulldog footy; we’re tough. It’s just what we do,” he remarked during an interview.

The Bulldogs made a powerful start to the match, with Jacob Preston opening the scoring in the 10th minute after a strong run following a pass from stand-in five-eighth Bailey Hayward. The Sharks momentarily responded through Nicho Hynes, who set up Kayal Iro for a try shortly after. However, Preston’s skillful play again enabled the Bulldogs’ Bronson Xerri to score, putting Canterbury ahead.

The first half witnessed significant physicality, with both Rudolf and Siosifa Talakai forced off for head injury assessments. By halftime, the Bulldogs led 8-6, after Stephen Crichton missed two straightforward conversion attempts, a point of contention for the Sharks.

As the second half commenced, Crichton crossed the line again, enhancing the Bulldogs’ lead. Xerri continued to shine, bulldozing his way through the Sharks’ defence to score his second try, sealing the Bulldogs’ fate.

The Sharks, deprived of key players, fought back and were awarded a penalty for a late tackle that seemed to infringe the contest for the ball. However, the decision was overturned after review, leaving them frustrated. In a peculiar turn of events, Sitili Tupouniua was sent to the sin bin for a late charge even after the final whistle had blown, adding to the chaotic finish of the match.

With this victory, the Bulldogs not only maintained their unbeaten streak but also climbed to the top of the NRL ladder for the first time since 2016, a significant milestone for the team as they strive for success this season.
