South Australia’s implementation of a statewide ban on mobile phones in public schools has yielded impressive outcomes since its introduction at the start of 2023. The initiative has resulted in a notable reduction in student misbehaviour, with reports indicating a 38 per cent decrease in serious behavioural issues involving phones by the end of 2024. Furthermore, there has been a significant 57 per cent drop in major problems associated with social media.

Students have shared their experiences regarding the ban, with Year 11 student Jasmine Atkinson noting initial difficulties, as she relied on her phone even for basic functions like a calculator. However, she has since experienced improved concentration and academic performance. Education Minister Blair Boyer highlighted a growing compliance with the ban, with students expressing that their schools have become better environments without mobile phones.

The ban initially faced resistance but has now been positively embraced at schools such as Hamilton Secondary College, where students have returned to pre-digital forms of engagement during breaks. Boyer remarked on the shift in student attitudes, stating that while there was no immediate gratitude from students, the policy was ultimately instituted for their benefit. He expressed satisfaction with the progress made in creating a more conducive learning atmosphere.

Overall, the mobile phone ban has significantly transformed South Australia’s public school landscape, fostering an environment where students are more focused and engaged without the distractions of their devices.
