Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has urged for an end to the politicisation of antisemitic incidents following the discovery of explosives linked to an ongoing investigation. Addressing the media, Albanese emphasised the importance of not discussing operational details to avoid undermining the investigation, stating, “I do not talk about operational matters for an ongoing investigation.”
Criticism has arisen from the Coalition and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, who argue that national cabinet should have been briefed about the explosives discovery. Although Albanese acknowledged the rise in antisemitic attacks and had convened a national cabinet meeting to address the issue shortly after the incident, he maintained that standard protocol would not allow for public commentary on active investigations.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb also expressed concern over a media leak regarding the explosives, highlighting that such disclosures could hinder investigative strategies. Dutton, while denying allegations of politicising antisemitic violence, noted the gravity of the thwarted attack on Jewish interests and asserted that discussing such events was justified.
Albanese reiterated that this situation should remain free from political debate and reiterated the necessity of prioritising ongoing investigations over political discourse.
