Nora Aunor, a legendary figure in Philippine cinema who captivated audiences for over seven decades, has passed away at the age of 71. Her children confirmed her death on social media, although details about the circumstances surrounding it remain unclear.
Fellow actor Lotlot de León expressed her sorrow on Instagram, highlighting her mother’s immense talent and the lasting impact she had on generations with her artistry and passion. De León noted that Aunor’s legacy would endure, celebrating her remarkable voice and on-screen presence.
Born Nora Cabaltera Villamayor in a poverty-stricken family in Camarines Sur, Aunor’s early life included selling water at a local train station. She first gained recognition as a singer in the 1960s before transitioning into film, ultimately contributing over 200 performances in both film and television. Aunor’s notable works included classic films such as Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos, Bulaklak sa City Jail, and The Flor Contemplacion Story, which solidified her status as an icon of Philippine cinema.
Her remarkable talent earned her numerous accolades, including multiple best actress awards in the Philippines for her role in Andrea, Paano ba ang Maging Isang Ina?, and an Asian Film Award for her portrayal in Thy Womb as a midwife. Aunor remained active in the industry up until last year, featuring in the film Mananambal and the series Lilet Matias, Attorney-at-Law.
In 2022, she was honoured as a National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, a significant recognition in her career. This accolade came after a controversy in 2014 when former President Benigno Aquino III denied her the title due to a past drug-related arrest in the US, which sparked public outcry. Her lawyer later clarified that the arrest stemmed from a pipe found in luggage that Aunor did not pack herself, and the charges were eventually dropped after she completed a diversionary programme.
Aunor was married to actor Christopher de León from 1975 until their separation in 1996. She is survived by their five children: Lotlot, Ian, Matet, Kiko, and Kenneth de León. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, as family members prepare to honour the life of a true cinematic legend, whose contributions to arts and culture will not be forgotten.
