The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch in Australia on June 5, 2025, priced at $699, which is slightly better than anticipated considering its expected US price of $449. A special bundle including the game Mario Kart World will retail for $769. This successor to the original Nintendo Switch, which debuted in March 2017, has generated excitement with new titles announced, including Donkey Kong Bananza and a game from Elden Ring developers, From Software.

Pre-orders have commenced, with EB Games leading the charge, and Nintendo is taking steps to prevent scalping, which affected the original Switch’s availability. President Shuntaro Furukawa has promised more consoles will be manufactured to ensure adequate supply.

Technical specifications reveal impressive upgrades for the Switch 2. It boasts a larger, 7.9-inch LCD display—30% bigger than the original and 15% larger than the OLED model—while also featuring enhanced visual capabilities with support for 4K and HDR. The console will include two performance modes for games like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond that allow for either 4K at 60FPS or 1080p at 120FPS with a cooling fan in the dock.

A striking feature of the Switch 2 is the innovative Joy-Con, which can function as a mouse, enabling new gameplay mechanics. A built-in camera will allow for video chats, while Nintendo plans to introduce GameChat, making it easier to connect with friends during gameplay. Compatibility with a wide range of existing digital and physical Switch games is confirmed, though there are some exceptions.

In terms of storage, the Switch 2 comes with 256GB, a significant upgrade from the original’s 32GB. Users will need a new MicroSD Express card for additional storage, as standard MicroSD cards will not be compatible. Battery life specifics remain unconfirmed, but improvements over previous models are anticipated.

A preview event will take place in Melbourne on May 10-11, with tickets already sold out, while other global preview events are scheduled in various cities. Each Nintendo Switch 2 package will include the console, two Joy-Con controllers, various accessories, and a docking station, all designed to enhance the portable gaming experience. With these advancements, Nintendo aims to broaden the gaming landscape, promising a memorable experience for players. More information and announcements are expected leading up to the launch date.
