A tragic accident occurred early on Sunday morning when a 55-year-old woman from India, who was on holiday, lost her life. In addition, a pregnant 28-year-old woman was severely injured, resulting in the loss of her unborn child. The incident took place shortly after 2:30 am at North Lambton, where a highway patrol officer noticed a white Holden Commodore containing four teenagers with allegedly unregistered plates.
The officer initiated a stop at a traffic light and activated their siren. The Commodore reportedly veered onto the wrong side of the road, leading another police vehicle to pursue it. Shortly thereafter, the Commodore collided with a Hyundai carrying the two women. Following the crash, police allege that the 19-year-old driver and a passenger fled the scene, abandoning two injured teen passengers, aged 15 and 17, who remain in critical condition at John Hunter Hospital.
Investigations revealed that the driver is known to police, and although the vehicle was not reported stolen, it was registered to the passenger who fled alongside him. The police have initiated a critical incident investigation concerning the actions taken by the officer during the vehicle pursuit.
Later that day, police apprehended a 19-year-old man in Mayfield, who is currently assisting with inquiries, although no charges have been filed as of yet. Authorities are still in contact with the 17-year-old girl believed to have been riding in the front seat of the Holden. The incident has raised serious concerns regarding road safety and police pursuit protocols.
