Nick Riewoldt has expressed his "frustration" regarding the ongoing situation involving Jamarra Ugle-Hagan, a star player for the Western Bulldogs, who is currently on indefinite leave due to personal issues. The 24-year-old hasn’t participated in any matches this season, raising concerns about his future in both the club and the sport, despite interest from rival teams.

On a recent episode of SEN’s Whateley, Laura Kane, the executive general manager at the AFL, shared that a management plan is in place to support Ugle-Hagan during this challenging time. She indicated that the specifics of this plan are private and tailored to his needs. Kane emphasised the importance of Ugle-Hagan prioritising his wellbeing, highlighting the resources his team is ready to offer, including mental health support from Dr Kate Hall’s department. Kane noted, "He is a great kid and a really good player," expressing hope for his return to football once he navigates his current issues.

Since making his debut four years ago, Ugle-Hagan has been a key player for the Bulldogs, contributing 103 goals in 67 games. Despite his absence, the team has managed to secure four wins and sit in eighth place on the AFL ladder. Riewoldt remarked on the unpredictability of Ugle-Hagan’s availability, explaining that he had been attending training sporadically, leaving the team unaware of his actual status. This uncertainty was particularly detrimental when he missed a mandatory session during the Adelaide Gather Round, intensifying the frustration for the Bulldogs.

As the situation unfolds, Ugle-Hagan is reportedly on full pay, ranging between $800,000 to $900,000 for the year. Riewoldt shared his thoughts on the balance of power between players and clubs, suggesting that this dynamic needs reevaluation. He expressed concern about players potentially taking advantage of their situation, indicating that rumours have surfaced regarding Ugle-Hagan’s commitment to returning to the field this season.

As Ugle-Hagan’s teammates prepare to face Port Adelaide this weekend, the broader implications of his absence continue to spark discussion within the AFL community.
