Canterbury Bulldogs have enhanced their long-term squad aspirations by signing young Cronulla Sharks star Kade Dykes. The 23-year-old, who has faced significant injury challenges since debuting three years ago, is currently recovering from a torn patellar tendon. With his future at Cronulla uncertain past this season, Dykes has secured a contract with the Bulldogs, set to commence in 2026.

Phil Gould, the Bulldogs’ general manager of football, has expressed confidence that Dykes will thrive within the club’s system. He highlighted Dykes’ versatility, noting his capacity to play both as a fullback and in the halves, and expressed optimism about his potential. Gould remarked, “While injuries have hindered his development, Kade is a hard worker and will integrate well into our squad.”

Dykes, son of former Sharks halfback Adam Dykes, is expected to strengthen various positions for Canterbury, particularly as he vies for the fullback role. Current player Connor Tracey has been performing well, but his contract expires in 2027, making him available to explore opportunities from November 1.

In terms of the halves, Dykes faces stiff competition due to the recent addition of Lachlan Galvin and the commendable performance of Matt Burton. The Bulldogs are also nurturing talents like Mitchell Woods, who is progressing towards his first-grade debut, along with Cassius Tia and Bailey Hayward, who, while primarily playing as a hooker, also has a history in the halves.

This influx of talent creates a competitive environment that could lead to selection challenges for coach Cameron Ciraldo, as fitting all these promising players into the lineup weekly will undoubtedly be complex. Additionally, Canterbury will welcome Knights prop Leo Thompson to their roster in the upcoming season.

Overall, the acquisition of Kade Dykes represents a strategic move for the Bulldogs, aiming to bolster their spine for future success.
