A health warning has been issued in Western Australia following the confirmation of a measles case at Bunbury Hospital. Authorities are urging anyone who visited the facility between March 19 and 23 to observe for potential symptoms.
Symptoms of measles to look out for include fever, fatigue, runny nose, cough, sore red eyes, and a distinctive red blotchy rash. Generally, individuals exposed to the virus typically begin to show symptoms approximately 10 days later, though this can vary from 7 to 18 days.
Those who exhibit any symptoms should immediately wear a mask, isolate themselves, and seek medical attention for testing. This alert follows a recent report of measles at Hakea Prison.
In total, nearly 35 exposure sites have been identified, which also include Fiona Stanley Hospital and Beeliar Urgent Care Clinic in Yangebup. This particular case is linked to a recent traveller who returned from South East Asia, where there are ongoing measles outbreaks in countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia.
