New Kangaroos head coach Kevin Walters has expressed confidence in Australia’s rugby league talent, downplaying concerns about star players potentially switching allegiance to Samoa for upcoming competitions. He acknowledged the reports that stars such as Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, and Payne Haas might opt to play for Samoa instead of joining the Australian team for the Ashes series. Walters stated he fully supports players who wish to represent Pasifika nations.

On Nine’s Today, Walters noted, “I’m not really concerned about that,” highlighting the substantial depth within the Australian squad. He praised the influx of talent demonstrated during the State of Origin, emphasising that Australia’s rugby league clubs have cultivated a wealth of skilled players in recent years.

While he respects the aspirations of those looking to play for their heritage, Walters mentioned he would communicate his plans for the Kangaroos to the players considering defection but would not pressure them into staying. "They can make their decisions," he asserted, stressing his intentions to articulate the future vision for the team.

The eligibility rules state that only players committed to Australia or tier-two nations can participate in State of Origin. This means athletes like Jarome Luai, Brian To’o, and Stephen Crichton, who represent Samoa, would be unable to take part in the prestigious series. Former NSW Blues great Brad Fittler has suggested that State of Origin should be restricted solely to players whose allegiance is to Australia, which could further complicate the eligibility landscape.

Fa’asuamaleaui, originally from Orange, NSW, has played for Samoa in the past but now dons Australia’s green and gold. Tabuai-Fidow, born in Cairns, has a similar background, representing Samoa once before committing to Australia in his recent matches. Haas, who hails from Newcastle with Samoan heritage, has only donned the Australian jersey.

In summary, Walters is focused on building a strong Kangaroos team, secure in the knowledge of the depth of talent available. He has made it clear his intention is not to sway players but to share his vision for the future of Australian rugby league, signalling an open and respectful dialogue on player commitments. As the Ashes approach, the situation surrounding player allegiances, particularly with regards to representation and eligibility, remains a topic of significant interest.
