In a pioneering initiative for Queensland, the Gould Adams Park Aquatic Centre in Logan has integrated artificial intelligence technology called Lynxight to enhance swimmer safety. This advanced tool monitors the water for signs of distress, promptly notifying lifeguards through smartwatches with the precise location of any swimmers in trouble. According to RJ Houston, General Manager at the Royal Lifesaving Society, this technology supplements lifeguards’ efforts rather than replacing them, improving deployment efficiency.
The aim is to achieve a rescue within 30 seconds: 10 seconds to identify a distressed swimmer and an additional 20 seconds for intervention. This innovative solution has already been adopted in 75 public pools across Australia, with plans for its next installation at Beenleigh Aquatic Centre next year, as reported by Logan Mayor Jon Raven. He noted that other councils in south-east Queensland are closely observing Logan’s initiative. Alarmingly, last year, Australian public pools recorded nearly 8,000 rescues and six fatalities, underscoring the need for enhanced safety measures.
