The Royal Australian Mint has launched a new $2 coin to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Torres Strait Islander flag’s recognition as one of Australia’s national flags. Officially released today, this coin prominently features the distinctive flag but is not intended for general circulation.
Designed in 1992 by Bernard Namo, the Torres Strait Islander flag incorporates motifs inspired by local marine life, traditional fishing implements, and the surrounding environment. The coin itself utilizes symbols that reflect the significance of the flag—including representations of land, sea, community, culture, and unity, as highlighted by the Mint.
Artist Elyssa Waterford has crafted the coin’s design, which includes contributions from Lavinia Ketchell, an artist from Erub Island (Darnley Island). The colour scheme of the coin carries deep meaning: blue reflects the ocean, green represents the land, and black stands for the Torres Strait Islander people.
Emily Martin, the acting CEO of the Royal Australian Mint, remarked that this coin serves as a meaningful tribute to the heritage, identity, and strength of Torres Strait Islander communities, highlighting a vital step towards enhancing public recognition and respect for their culture.
Cr Phillemon Mosby, Mayor of the Torres Strait Island Regional Council, emphasised that the coin represents much more than mere currency. He described it as a national recognition of the cultural depth and contributions of Torres Strait Islander peoples, marking a proud moment for those from the region to have their flag acknowledged in such a significant and celebrated way.
Collectors can acquire this special coin in two formats: as an aluminium bronze coin presented on a card, or as a fine silver proof housed in a deluxe presentation box.
