Novak Djokovic has achieved another remarkable milestone by surpassing one of his long-time rival’s professional records during a commanding straight-sets victory over Camilo Ugo at the Miami Open. Ugo, who entered the tournament as a lucky loser, struggled to withstand Djokovic’s dominant performance and ultimately fell 6-1, 7-6(1) on Monday (AEDT).

The Serbian star embarked on this tournament with the aim of capturing a record seventh title in Miami, along with a chance to break another record previously held by Rafael Nadal. In the wake of Djokovic’s triumph at the 2022 Wimbledon final against Nick Kyrgios, Nadal’s record of 20 major singles titles was eclipsed, solidifying Djokovic as the player with the most significant achievements in tennis.

Djokovic’s victory in Miami marked his 411th win in ATP Masters 1000 matches, further enhancing his legacy over Nadal, who held 410 wins prior to this match. As Djokovic continues in the tournament, a potential seventh title would raise his total to 416 match victories.

Following his achievement, Djokovic expressed his gratitude for reaching yet another milestone, stating, “I’m honoured to have another record broken… there’s always something on the line every time I play, and of course that motivates me to perform well at tournaments.”

Despite facing a challenging tiebreak in the second set, Djokovic’s experience shone through, as he secured his win in just 1 hour and 45 minutes. His next opponent will be the Italian world No. 16, Lorenzo Musetti, who advanced after defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Other notable matches included Grigor Dimitrov’s comeback victory over Karen Khachanov, and Sebastian Korda’s straight-sets win against ninth seed Stefano Tsitsipas.

As the tournament progresses, Djokovic’s drive and skill continue to set new records, making him a formidable competitor and a central figure in modern tennis history.
