The upcoming NATO operation, “Eastern Sentry,” is set to kick off in the days ahead, with participation from nations including Denmark, France, the United Kingdom, and Germany. Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary General, emphasised that this initiative is intended to enhance the alliance’s defensive capabilities and demonstrate its unwavering readiness to protect member countries.

Rutte referred to a recent drone violation of Polish airspace by Russia, describing it as a “dangerous and unacceptable” act, highlighting that such incidents are becoming increasingly frequent along NATO’s eastern boundaries. NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Alexus Grynkewich, explained that this operation aims to be “flexible and agile,” integrating enhanced air and ground defences alongside improved information-sharing among allied nations.

While the situation currently centres on Poland, Grynkewich expressed that the implications extend beyond one country, affecting the security of all alliance members. Rutte reassured Poland and the wider Alliance that NATO is committed to a rapid response and robust defence of its territories.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk labelled the drone incursion as an intentional attack, firmly rejecting suggestions that it was accidental. Tusk stated, “We wish it were a mistake, but it wasn’t,” following information suggesting Russia deployed around 21 drones, with some possibly returning after breaching Polish airspace.

NATO’s ongoing assessment of the situation will determine the nature of Russia’s actions, with Rutte affirming that regardless of intent, such breaches require a resolute response from NATO. He reiterated that Eastern Sentry is established to fortify the alliance’s defensive posture and capabilities.
