A new nasal spray vaccine for young children under five will be introduced in Queensland ahead of the 2026 flu season, providing a needle-free option for vaccination. Dr McDougall also noted that the Flu Mist has been successfully used in the UK for nearly a decade, leading to a substantial increase in vaccination rates among children. The nasal spray vaccine has shown good efficacy and a low risk of side effects, which can be similar to those experienced with traditional flu jabs, such as headaches or runny noses.
Health Minister Tim Nicholls confirmed that the Flu Mist would be available at various locations, including GP clinics and community pharmacies, where flu vaccinations are currently administered.
