A significant earthquake struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025, leading to a devastating humanitarian crisis amidst an ongoing civil war. The military-led government reported at least 1,002 fatalities, with an additional 2,376 injured and 30 individuals still unaccounted for. Authorities indicated that these figures might increase as data collection continues.

The earthquake, centred near Mandalay, was accompanied by several aftershocks, one measuring 6.4 magnitude. The tremors caused extensive destruction, collapsing buildings, buckling roads, and damaging infrastructure, complicating rescue efforts in an already perilous situation. The conflict in Myanmar has impeded aid delivery, with many affected areas inaccessible to relief organisations. Reports suggest that over 3 million people are displaced, and nearly 20 million require assistance.

In Thailand, the quake impacted the greater Bangkok area, leading to six reported deaths, 26 injuries, and 47 missing, predominantly linked to a construction site near the Chatuchak market. A 33-storey building under construction crumbled during the earthquake, trapping workers inside.

Rescue operations continue, but hope is dwindling for many searching for missing loved ones. The international community has begun to respond, with China and Russia among the first to send aid, followed by contributions from India, Malaysia, and South Korea. The United Nations has allocated $5 million for initial relief efforts.

The earthquake’s impact is notably severe given Myanmar’s ongoing civil unrest, which has rendered large portions of the country dangerous and difficult for aid organisations to navigate. Longstanding conflict has left the government struggling to control many regions, exacerbating the crisis as local leaders call for urgent support to address the dire humanitarian needs.
