Elon Musk has openly criticised U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed agenda bill, vocally branding it a “disgusting abomination.” In a series of posts on social media platform X, Musk expressed his frustration, describing the bill as laden with excessive spending and declaring, “Congress is making America bankrupt.” He also urged voters to hold accountable those politicians who supported the legislation, implying that there will be repercussions in the November elections for those who have “betrayed the American people.”
Musk’s comments surprised some officials within the White House, who were aware of his criticisms but did not anticipate such a strong public condemnation. Despite prior discussions with White House staff, Musk’s forthrightness took many aback, including remarks made by House Speaker Mike Johnson. Johnson defended the legislation and described his recent conversation with Musk as “very friendly,” claiming that Musk misunderstood the bill’s benefits.
Following the bill’s passage through the House, Musk expressed disappointment, arguing that it would exacerbate the nation’s budget deficit and undermine positive initiatives in the tech industry. Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that President Trump was already aware of Musk’s stance on the bill, maintaining that the administration views the legislation as a significant achievement.
Adding to the discourse, Senator Rand Paul echoed Musk’s sentiments, emphasising concerns over governmental waste and the impact of further national debt. In his interactions with Trump, Paul indicated his reluctance to support the bill if it included a debt ceiling increase, which contradicts conservative fiscal principles.
Despite Musk’s influential critique, Senate Majority Leader John Thune remains committed to advancing the bill, acknowledging the divergent opinions among lawmakers while proceeding with the agenda.
