Rebecca Denton, the mother of three-week-old Alvin, expressed her profound grief and anger towards her ex-partner Ashley McGregor in South Australia’s District Court. This confrontation revolved around the tragic death of their infant son, who lost his life due to violent shaking by McGregor four years prior in Christie Downs, Adelaide.
Denton conveyed her anguish, stating, “I will be forever left wondering what my baby boy would be like, what his voice would have sounded like.” She lamented the irreplaceable moments she would never experience with Alvin, including hearing him express love or feeling his hugs. Her only remnants of him are photographs and his ashes.
The court found McGregor guilty of manslaughter and neglect despite his claims that Alvin’s tragic injuries were the result of a benign accident in their home. The evidence pointed towards the infant having been violently shaken, and it was revealed that McGregor failed to seek help for 42 hours while Alvin’s condition deteriorated. In a disturbing display of indifference, he had even encouraged Denton to blow cannabis smoke in the baby’s face, leading Judge Paul Muscat to label his actions as “reprehensible.” Muscat explicitly stated that “pretending the baby would get better just doesn’t cut it.”
In addition to McGregor’s criminal rulings, Denton has also faced legal issues, having been previously convicted of neglect for not providing necessary medical attention to Alvin. Currently, she is serving her sentence under home detention.
As for McGregor, he has consistently denied the accusations of shaking Alvin and neglecting his wellbeing. He has submitted appeals against his manslaughter and neglect convictions. The 35-year-old is presently incarcerated for unrelated offences and is scheduled for sentencing in two weeks.
This harrowing case underscores the tragic loss of a young life and the heartbreaking repercussions of neglect and abuse.
