On Saturday, US authorities confirmed that at least 11 individuals were stabbed at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, with a suspect now in custody. All victims are currently receiving treatment at Munson Healthcare, the largest medical facility in the northern Michigan area, though details regarding their conditions have not yet been disclosed.

The Michigan State Police stated that their investigation is being led by the local sheriff’s office, although specific details surrounding the incident remain sparse. To ensure public safety, the authorities have requested that people avoid the vicinity while the situation is being assessed.

In the aftermath, emergency services, including numerous police vehicles and a fire truck, were dispatched to the scene. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her concern over the “horrible news” and extended her sympathies to the victims and the community affected by this violent act. She noted that her office is in communication with law enforcement regarding the developments.

A spokesperson for Walmart, Joe Pennington, indicated that the company is collaborating with police and has advised that all inquiries be directed to the authorities. Additionally, FBI officials announced their involvement, stating they are on-site to offer necessary support.

Traverse City, a popular tourist destination by Lake Michigan, is famed for its annual cherry festival, wineries, and picturesque lighthouses. It is situated approximately 40 kilometres east of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Updated information regarding the incident is expected to be released by Munson Healthcare as the situation unfolds.
