Today marks the second anniversary of a tragic accident near Greta in New South Wales’ Hunter Valley, where a wedding guest bus overturned at a roundabout, resulting in the loss of ten lives. The horrific incident occurred around 11:30 PM on June 11, 2023, when the driver, Brett Button, lost control of the vehicle while navigating the roundabout in heavy fog.

The bus was transporting guests back from a wedding at Wandin Valley Estate to Singleton when it crashed, leading to not only the ten fatalities but also injuries to 25 others. In the aftermath, Button faced serious legal repercussions; he pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including ten counts of dangerous driving causing death and was subsequently sentenced to 32 years in prison, with a minimum term of 24 years.

As the community prepares to gather in remembrance, Maitland MP and NSW Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison reflected on the impact of the tragedy. She stated that the event had resonated deeply within New South Wales and across the nation, profoundly affecting families and friends from all over Australia. Aitchison emphasized the ongoing pain experienced by the victims’ loved ones and acknowledged the difficult emotions stirred up by this anniversary.

To ensure safety for those visiting the site today, traffic control staff have been stationed there since June 7, directing mourners and advising them to adhere to barriers and pedestrian crossings. Aitchison also paid tribute to the victims, thanking first responders and healthcare professionals who tirelessly worked to assist during the aftermath of the crash.

The victims of the crash included Darcy Bulman, Nadene McBride, her daughter Kyah, Kane Symons, Andrew and Lynan Scott, Zach Bray, Angus Craig, Tori Cowburn, and Rebecca Mullen. Each year, as the community gathers to honour their memories, the lasting impact of the event serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of road safety.
