Minjee Lee is on the brink of making history as she aims to become the fourth Australian—and only the third Australian woman—to win three major golf championships. After a remarkable third round at the Women’s PGA Championship in Texas, where she achieved an impressive 3-under par and a bogey-free performance, Lee holds a commanding four-shot lead heading into the final round.

Despite sweltering heat and strong winds affecting the competitors, Lee’s consistent play stood out. She managed to remain undeterred, producing flawless golf in conditions where many struggled. Former leader Jeeno Thitikul experienced a setback during the round, with six bogeys and only two birdies, slipping down to second place as Lee capitalised on the opportunity.

Lee, who previously won the US Women’s Open and the British Women’s Open, is motivated to join the ranks of Karrie Webb, Jan Stephenson, and Peter Thompson by securing her third major title. Reflecting on the challenge of final rounds, Lee expressed, “Major Sunday is like no other. Regardless of where you are on the leaderboard, you’re never truly comfortable until you’re holding that trophy.” She emphasised the importance of focusing on her game, stating her intention to maintain a balanced approach and putting forth her best effort, even with a substantial lead.

In her round, Lee achieved 15 pars and three birdies, demonstrating an ability to play strategically under pressure. Companion Grace Kim also had a noteworthy performance, shooting a 4-under 68 which elevated her from tied for 68th to a share of 10th position.

As the competition heads into its final stages, Lee’s steady performance places her in a promising position. She opened the third round with a series of eight pars before recording birdies at critical moments on the 9th, 14th, and 15th holes. Overall, Lee’s resilience and tactical play have set the stage for an exciting conclusion to the tournament, with all eyes on her for a potential historic achievement.

Meanwhile, world No.1 Nelly Korda described the challenging course conditions as “just brutal,” having finished her round with a score of 72. As competitors prepare for the highly anticipated final round, Lee’s strength and composure could be key factors in her quest for a third major title.
