Mineral Resources has inaugurated the Mungala Resort, an innovative fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) accommodation facility situated at its iron ore mining operations near Onslow, Western Australia. This facility is being hailed as a pioneering development in FIFO accommodations, with a strong emphasis on the health and well-being of its workers.

The resort boasts 500 spacious rooms, each approximately three times larger than a typical donga, equipped with private bathrooms, kitchenettes, and laundry amenities. Currently, 23 couples have made the resort their home, enjoying the luxurious environment it offers. FIFO worker Cory Cruttenden praised the accommodation, stating that it is “second to none” and unlike anything he has previously experienced. His partner, Deni Latus, remarked that the living conditions at the resort surpass her own house, adding, “It is a bit of a holiday, it is nice up here.”

Another resident, dump truck operator Lisa Vines, described Mungala Resort as “the Club Med of the Pilbara, if not Australia,” emphasising the sense of respect and value felt by the workers, many of whom express a desire to remain there.

Amenities at the resort include an 18-hole miniature golf course, racing and golf simulators, basketball and tennis courts, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and a gym. Residents also benefit from an on-site restaurant and tavern, which serves around 175,000 dinners each year. The resort is conveniently located near MinRes Ken’s Bore airport and is only a 20-minute drive to the mine, where crushed ore is prepared for transportation to the Port of Ashburton, located 150 kilometres away.

Andrea Chapman, Director of People at Mineral Resources, noted that the new accommodation could enhance the appeal of FIFO work, as it attracts individuals who may have previously been hesitant about such positions, including women. She assured that besides its aesthetic appeal, the facility also prioritises safety.

Overall, the Mungala Resort sets a new standard for FIFO living, blending comfort with modern amenities and a focus on worker welfare.
