As the final days of summer approach, much of Australia is bracing for a significant heatwave. On Saturday, summer transitions to autumn, but before that occurs, a high-pressure system over the Great Australian Bight is set to unleash hot, dry air across the country, leaving millions feeling the heat.
Sydney is expected to peak at a balmy 32 degrees on Friday, the last day of summer, with even hotter conditions likely in the western suburbs. Meanwhile, Melbourne will experience a brief spike to 34 degrees before cooling off to mid-20s for the remainder of the week. Brisbane’s temperatures are forecast to hover around the low 30s, with slight relief anticipated due to incoming rain beginning Sunday.
Adelaide’s weather will see highs of 33 degrees today, followed by 31-degree days mid-week, and a slight drop as Friday approaches. In the nation’s capital, Canberra is gearing up for a similarly warm day at 34 degrees, with high 30s expected to persist into next week.
Perth’s temperatures will reach between 30 and 33 degrees before a cool change arrives on Monday. In contrast, Hobart is predicted to hit 28 degrees but will otherwise trend down to the low 20s for the week.
Northern Australia, particularly Darwin, remains in high summer mode, experiencing temperatures of 33 to 34 degrees along with potential rain and storms, with even hotter days forecast for early next week, reaching up to 35 degrees.
Notably, Weatherzone reports that Australia’s interior will endure the most extreme heat, with places like Birdsville in Queensland predicted to soar to scorching highs of 43 to 46 degrees throughout the week.
This surge in heat is a stark reminder as Australia moves toward autumn that summer is making its last stand.
