A polar air mass has enveloped south-east Australia, causing frigid conditions that have left many residents in chilly discomfort this morning. Sydney and Brisbane are experiencing their coldest mornings of the year, following Sydney’s chilliest day in 2025 yesterday, according to Jonathan How from the Bureau of Meteorology. Temperatures in areas of southern Brisbane dropped to as low as 11 or 12 degrees Celsius, but this is relatively mild compared to Goulburn in New South Wales, where the thermometer plummeted to a frosty -7 degrees.

Despite the biting cold, a sunny and slightly milder day is expected today. However, more cold weather is imminent. How noted that while the first week of winter has been particularly brisk due to the current polar front, the overall forecast for the season indicates above-average temperatures may follow.

As the week progresses, another polar blast is forecasted for Saturday and Sunday, likely bringing further chills. Adelaide is set to encounter rain tonight, while Melbourne is expected to experience similar weather tomorrow, ahead of the approaching cold front that will affect New South Wales and Queensland as well. “It’s not unusual for this time of year, though it can be a bit of a shock to the system,” How remarked.
