A recent survey by Finder has revealed that millions of Australians are enduring frigid winter conditions by abstaining from using heaters due to the escalating cost of living. The findings indicate that 13% of the population consistently goes without heating to evade high energy bills, while an additional 28% limit their heater usage wherever possible. This reluctance to turn up the heat affects approximately 8.8 million people across the country.

Finder’s energy expert, Marian Gabaji, expressed concern, highlighting the distressing reality where many individuals are compromising their comfort and wellbeing to avoid hefty energy costs. With parts of Australia experiencing extreme weather and sub-zero temperatures, Gabaji pointed out that the financial burden of energy bills often forces families into difficult choices, such as deciding between heating their homes or affording food.

The financial strain is evident, with nearly a third of Australians listing their energy bills among their top three most stressful expenses. In July, the average energy bill reached $374, a 13% increase from the previous year, illustrating the growing challenges for households.

Beyond discomfort, Gabaji warned that living without adequate heating can pose serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and young children. The stress associated with high energy costs can lead some individuals into debt as they struggle to manage their bills.

Despite these challenges, Gabaji advised that there are strategies to reduce energy costs. By switching to more advantageous energy plans and adopting energy-efficient heating solutions—like electric blankets or ceramic heaters—households can potentially save significant amounts on their bills. She also noted that various state government rebates could assist households in upgrading to energy-efficient appliances, ultimately saving money year-round.

Gabaji emphasised the importance of comparing energy options, stating that many retailers rely on customer loyalty and a sense of overwhelm, which can prevent households from seeking more cost-effective alternatives. In summary, while Australians are currently facing considerable winter hardships due to rising energy costs, there are practical steps available to help alleviate the financial burden.
