The survey, which polled over 1,000 people, found that nearly 19% have either moved in with others or postponed their plans to live independently solely to save money.
About 10% of those surveyed reported returning to their family homes, relying on the financial support of parents or grandparents. Others have chosen to cohabit with siblings or friends to split living expenses, while 3% have even moved back in with an ex-partner. Finder’s personal finance expert, Taylor Blackburn, noted that this trend highlights a growing difficulty in achieving financial independence.
The financial landscape is marked by skyrocketing rents, increasing interest rates, and general cost-of-living pressures, making solo living increasingly unattainable for many. Younger Australians, particularly Gen Z, seem to be disproportionately affected, with nearly 39% indicating they have entered or maintained shared living situations in the last year due to financial concerns.
Blackburn remarked that what was once viewed as a temporary arrangement is now becoming a standard practice, as individuals prioritise affordability over comfort. He advised Australians to cultivate a financial safety net where possible, emphasising the importance of having savings to manage unforeseen expenses that could limit living options. He stated that even a modest emergency fund can significantly impact a person’s ability to maintain control over their living situation and avoid unwanted circumstances.
