As anticipation builds for Tropical Cyclone Alfred, the weather system is taking its time to reach the coast. However, communities in Queensland are already experiencing the cyclone’s impact, feeling the effects of destructive winds and massive swells, with waves measuring up to 12 metres. Residents in high-risk areas have been urged to take evacuation warnings seriously.
In particular, the Bupa Aged Care facility in Runaway Bay is facing unique challenges. With 108 residents, along with staff and their families, the facility is not able to evacuate quickly. Instead, they have prepared to remain together and weather the storm on-site.
Meanwhile, just across the border in northern New South Wales, locals are also steeling themselves for the cyclone’s arrival. For many in the Northern Rivers region, this serves as a stark reminder of the destructive power of nature.
As conditions intensify along the east coast, the community response highlights the need for vigilance and preparedness in the face of natural disasters.
