The US military executed an extensive operation against Iran, named Operation Midnight Hammer, on Saturday, involving over 125 aircraft. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine, alongside Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, provided details of the mission at a Pentagon briefing. The operation featured a strategic deception, using bombers as decoys by flying into the Pacific while the main assault proceeded quietly towards Iran with seven stealth B-2 bombers.

The bombers targeted two key Iranian nuclear sites, Fordow and Natanz, dropping more than a dozen 30,000-pound Massive Ordnance Penetrator bombs. Additionally, Tomahawk missiles were launched at facilities in Isfahan. The aerial strikes commenced at 6:40 PM ET (8:40 AM AEST) and concluded shortly after, exiting Iranian airspace by 7 PM ET.

The operation marked the longest mission for the B-2 bombers since the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, all spearheaded from a base in Missouri. Throughout the course of their 18-hour flight, comprehensive stealth measures were employed to maintain minimal communication, ensuring operational security.

Detailed timelines showcased the operation’s execution. It began just past midnight Friday into Saturday, with bombers launching, some heading west as a distraction. Around 5 PM ET (7 AM Sunday AEST), a US submarine fired over two dozen Tomahawk cruise missiles at the Isfahan nuclear site. By 6:40 PM ET, the first B-2 struck Fordow with bunker-buster bombs, followed by subsequent aircraft targeting the additional sites until 7:05 PM ET.

The attacks occurred at approximately 2:10 AM local time in Iran, followed by the US military’s safe return, noted by Caine, which did not encounter any resistance from Iranian forces during the operation or upon withdrawal.

Overall, the successful execution of Operation Midnight Hammer highlights the capabilities and strategic planning of the US military in addressing threats from Iran.
