After a challenging match against North Melbourne, where Carlton found themselves trailing by 46 points at the three-quarter time mark, coach Michael Voss delivered a passionate critique of his midfielders. The score stood at 13.6 (84) to 5.8 (38) when Voss addressed his team, urging them to step up their performance. His motivational tactics had a noticeable impact, as Carlton managed to score 35 points in the final quarter. However, they ultimately lost, with the final score being 13.6 (84) to 10.13 (73).

One of the key issues for Carlton was their scoring drought, as they failed to register a goal from midway through the first quarter until halfway through the third. They started strong, leading by nine points at the first break, but were unable to maintain momentum as North Melbourne dominated the game thereafter.

In his post-match interview, Voss expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s collective effort, emphasising the importance of sticking to their core values, especially during tough moments. “It’s not acceptable the way we played through that period,” he stated, indicating that the responsibility lies not only with the midfielders but with the entire team. He added that a thorough review of their performance will be necessary moving forward.

This setback intensifies scrutiny on Voss, with Carlton now sitting 10th on the ladder despite having high hopes at the season’s commencement. In contrast, North Melbourne’s victory brings them to 16th on the ladder, marking their fourth win of the season. The Kangaroos excelled in various statistical categories, showing higher disposal efficiency at 78.2 per cent and an inside 50 efficiency of 52.4 per cent.

Voss refrained from speculation regarding his job security, instead focusing on the need to remain present and improve. “The competitor in me is about getting better tomorrow,” he remarked, indicating his readiness to learn from this defeat and prepare for upcoming challenges.

Carlton faces a quick turnaround, with a match against Port Adelaide scheduled for Thursday, June 26. The focus now shifts to how effectively the team can regroup and address the issues that led to their recent performance while continuing to uphold their aspirations for the season.
