Cameron Smith has advised Michael Maguire against reinstating Ezra Mam into the Broncos squad immediately after the completion of his suspension. Mam’s return presents a challenge for Maguire, as he must decide between the talents of Ben Hunt, Billy Walters, and Cory Paix, who are all vying for crucial positions within the team’s line-up.
There is speculation that Mam would likely slot into the five-eighth role with Hunt transitioning to hooker. However, the recent heavy defeat to Penrith may prompt Maguire to reconsider his initial strategy of having Mam return through reserve grade. Former NRL star Johnathan Thurston stated that the situation requires careful consideration, ultimately suggesting Reynolds, Mam, and Hunt form the spine of the team.
Smith emphasized that while Hunt has proven his capabilities at hooker, he believes it would be premature to return Mam to the NRL at this stage. He argued that entering the competition after an extended period without play could hinder Mam’s performance against opponents who are now at peak physical condition, having been competing consistently.
Instead, Smith recommended that Mam should spend additional time in the Queensland Cup to build up his match fitness, suggesting that a week or two of preparation would be beneficial for both his timing and confidence. He acknowledged Mam’s talent, stating there is no doubt he belongs in the top 17 players of the team.
The Broncos are in need of Mam’s contribution after a rocky start to the season, juxtaposing a stellar victory over the Bulldogs with the recent setback against the Panthers. Following the match, Maguire confirmed that Mam is prepared to play, recognising the hard work he has put in off the field to earn his selection.
As the Broncos gear up for their upcoming clash against South Sydney in round 10, Maguire remains committed to evaluating his options and engaging with the leaders of the team to determine the best course of action moving forward.
