Brisbane Broncos coach Michael Maguire defended Reece Walsh after his below-par performance during the team’s defeat to the Eels on Friday night. Walsh, who nearly scored a crucial try but was ultimately ruled offside, struggled throughout the match, committing three errors, despite amassing 147 run metres and providing a try assist.
Maguire reflected on Walsh’s inconsistent night, emphasising the importance of playing for the long game. He stated, “Reece has been spectacular for us at times,” acknowledging the need for the players to better understand their roles in pressure situations.
Broncos captain Adam Reynolds backed Walsh, dismissing claims that the team’s attack lacked cohesion. He noted, “The spine generally moves like that anyway,” but accepted his responsibility to help Walsh maintain focus during games. Reynolds praised Walsh’s contributions to the team’s success, describing him as an “excitement machine” and an integral part of their performance.
After the match, Maguire provided an update regarding Payne Haas, who left the field due to an ankle issue, assuring fans that he wouldn’t be in doubt for the next game. He pointed out that the team’s approach was too “cute,” indicative of their failure to apply consistent pressure, which the Eels managed to do effectively.
Maguire expressed disappointment over the loss, saying, “They played the long game and we didn’t,” and highlighted the need for the Broncos to improve their consistency. He noted that while they have shown promising moments, the key to their success is maintaining that level of play over longer periods.
After this setback, the Broncos’ aspirations for a top-four finish are at risk, and they must secure three victories in their remaining six matches to guarantee a place in the top eight.
