An eight-storey car park in Melbourne’s CBD is set to undergo a significant transformation into an entertainment hub, comprising an array of restaurants, cafes, bars, a hotel, retail spaces, and a rooftop “sky garden.” The City of Melbourne recently announced the sale of the car park to the Merivale Group, led by Sydney hospitality magnate Justin Hemmes.
Positioned at 34-60 Little Collins Street, this new development aims to become a vibrant landmark, enriching the cultural and social fabric of the city. Justin Hemmes has been conceptualising this project for nearly ten years and expressed his excitement about its potential. He envisions it as not only Melbourne’s most thrilling destination but also a significant attraction for Australia. Hemmes wants to create a welcoming environment that fosters community interaction, safety, and energy.
In addition to Merivale’s renowned venues, such as Mimi’s and Totti’s, the new precinct will feature live music, entertainment, a boutique hotel, galleries, and a public sky garden, enhancing Melbourne’s hospitality scene.
Lord Mayor Nick Reece also conveyed his enthusiasm regarding the project, describing it as a substantial step forward for the city. He highlighted that the development will evolve into a “hospitality, entertainment and creative wonderland” for Melburnians, promising world-class amenities. While the sale price of the car park remains undisclosed, it is important to note that Dexus, a property company, holds a lease for the facility until June 2037. This agreement means that any changes to the site’s current use will require negotiations between Merivale and Dexus until the lease expires.
