Melbourne Storm has issued an apology to First Nations and Māori and Pasifika communities following the cancellation of a Welcome to Country ceremony that was meant to precede their Anzac Day match against South Sydney. The club attributed the oversight to internal miscommunication.
In light of this incident and as Indigenous Round approaches, Melbourne Storm released a statement acknowledging the impact of their cancellation. They have been in ongoing discussions with representatives from the Wurundjeri community, expressing their regret to all affected parties.
The club stated, “Melbourne Storm has been in ongoing communication with members of the Wurundjeri community following the events on Anzac Day and has apologised to the individuals, groups, and communities involved.” This sentiment extends to all First Nations and Māori and Pasifika communities who were impacted by the cancellation.
To demonstrate their respect and commitment to cultural inclusion, Melbourne Storm plans to conduct an Acknowledgement of Country during the Indigenous Round. This initiative signifies their dedication not only to honour the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players over the years but also to foster an environment that celebrates First Nations cultures beyond the designated cultural period.
Chairman Matt Tripp expressed his disappointment during the first reports of the cancellation, emphasising the significance of proper communication. He stated, “To have a miscommunication deem us as non-sensitive to Welcome to Country and beyond that, a part of Australian customs, has upset me greatly.”
As the club moves forward, they aim to strengthen connections with the local community and ensure that cultural protocols are respected and upheld. The club’s statement highlighted Indigenous Round as a pivotal opportunity for reflection and commitment to ongoing engagement with cultural practices and community.
Melbourne Storm’s proactive approach demonstrates their intent to learn from this incident and reinforce their respect for the rich traditions of Indigenous Australians.
