The Melbourne Star Observation Wheel is set to reopen next year following an $11 million agreement aimed at revitalising the attraction, which has been inactive since September 2021 due to the liquidation of MB Star Properties. The iconic 120-metre Ferris wheel, located in Docklands, has partnered with several prominent amusement businesses, including Robu Group, Ray Cammack Shows, and the local Skyline Attractions, which will manage operations.

Skyline Attractions’ co-managers, Jay and Jane Jones, who also operate wheels at St Kilda and South Wharf, are optimistic about rejuvenating the Melbourne Star. They anticipate welcoming around 250,000 visitors in the first year post-reopening, projected for late 2026. Jane Jones expressed confidence in their capability to manage the attraction effectively, mentioning plans to collaborate closely with local businesses and the council to launch a comprehensive marketing campaign as the reopening date approaches.

The couple aims to target a diverse audience, including families, seniors, schools, and tourists, highlighting the inclusive nature of a Ferris wheel that appeals to all ages. They plan to incorporate educational elements into the experience for school groups, while also engaging tourists from both interstate and abroad.

Melbourne’s Lord Mayor, Nick Reece, remarked on the significance of the reopening for the city and Docklands, stating that the initiative signals confidence in the area’s future. The Melbourne Star has a tumultuous history, having initially opened as the Southern Star in 2008 but closing shortly thereafter due to structural issues. After a substantial rebuild, it reopened in 2013 but faced another closure when MB Star Properties went into liquidation during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021.

As the Melbourne Star gears up for its new chapter, the emphasis is on community collaboration and creating a vibrant attraction that draws visitors back to the heart of Docklands.
